Explanation:
This script is an attempt to visually describe the Mopar VIN format from 1966 to 1975. Eventually, there will be similar scripts on this site for 1959-1965, as well as 1976-1980 VINs.
As you push the buttons above, the VIN you enter will be will be displayed along with as much information as possible about the vehicle belonging to that VIN. Note that the vehicle make is determined from the first character, but the vehicle model may differ depending upon price class, body style or year. The last six digits of the VIN are the sequential build number and will be discussed separately at another time. If you know the full, correct VIN of your Mopar, you can determine the year, make, model, body style and engine that is original to that car, much to the chagrin of our Bowtie Brethren who are lost without a numbers-matching engine under the hood.
This is designed as a learning tool, so play around with it and see what different characters in the VIN mean. See what changing the price class does to the model, or changing the year does to the engine.
The script contains no error checking, so entering a bad VIN will return a bad result. Build yourself a Super Stock Hemi Imperial station wagon VIN if you like. If you want more accurate information from a particular VIN, use the decoder at the top of the screen.
Have fun!
